Earlex HVLP Systems
reviewed by Rod Childs
Ever tried to paint or varnish a door only to find that after using your
best brush and following all the tips that it still has those telltale
brush strokes that everyone notices? Have you tried to apply finish to
a piece of furniture with all the odd contours only to end up with runs
everywhere? Well, if these are familiar stories then you’ll find
a solution in one of the two Earlex spray systems on offer from Carba-Tec.
Earlex has been a brand leader in the UK and Europe for over 20 years.
Both of these systems are self-contained HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure)
units that will make jobs like this a breeze. They’re compact units
that are ready to go to work with a minimum of fuss straight out of the
box - just add the finish of your choice.

High Volume Low Pressure Delivery
Unlike high pressure spray systems the Earlex uses low pressure delivery
to ensure that most of the finish you apply stays on the job and doesn’t
end up in the air, saving both the environment and your pocket. Even
if you have never used a spray gun before, by following the clear
instructions that come with these systems you’ll get a better
finish in a shorter time than you ever could with a brush. This means
no more brush marks and runs in those difficult spots to ruin that
project you spent so much time and effort on.

Earlex sprayers come in two models and both represent great value for
such quality products. The entry level spray station is suitable for the
home handyperson, occasional user or DIYer. The professional unit is for
the serious hobbyist or tradesperson. Both are compact, well-designed
units that require minimal setup before use. Just fill the gun with your
choice of finish, attach the hose to the motor unit and you’re ready
to start spraying. Always remember to spray in a well ventilated location
and observe safety requirements for the finish that you’re using.
Both systems will handle several different spray mediums such as varnishes,
wood preservatives, enamels, oil and water based paints and automotive
paints. The smaller unit is capable of spraying a wide range of finishes
from thin to medium viscosity while the larger unit with its more powerful
motor can tackle liquids of greater viscosity. You should also follow
the finish manufacturer’s recommendations regarding suitability
of the finish for spraying.
Earlex even allows you to fog with insecticide. This will make your outdoor
summer get-togethers with friends free of biting insects.
I have sprayed precatalysed lacquer with these systems and have obtained
a high quality finish with both. They are easy to clean and maintain and
will greatly reduce the time spent applying a finish - especially on fiddly
or odd shaped items - while consistently producing a high quality outcome.
