Woodworking Master Classes

Having the ability to work with hand tools adds enormous satisfaction to your woodworking experience. These masterclasses will increase your understanding of hand tool techniques and timber. They are an investment in yourself and will help you gain more confidence in your own abilities through working with craftspeople who have many years of experience in their field. You don't need to be an experienced woodworker to benefit from our classes, you just need an interest and the desire to give it a go.

• Sharpening with Peter Young

Saturday May 25th, 9:30am - 4:00pm
Cost: $180 including morning tea and lunch.

Being able to achieve a razor sharp edge on your tools forms the cornerstone of woodworking. This course is designed to demystify sharpening and show you how to achieve the very best results in sharpening your hand tools. Bring in your own chisels (no matter what condition they are in) and Peter will show you how to recondition and sharpen them. Peter will also cover grinding, abrasives, using Japanese Waterstones and DMT Diamond Whetstones for honing as well as tips on tuning handplanes, spokeshaves and scrapers. Maximum of 6 students.

• Cutting Mortise and Tenons with Peter Geddes

Saturday June 1st, 9:00am - 3:30pm
Cost: $180 including morning tea and lunch.

Mortise and tenons are one of the most crucial joints to be able to cut well. They are one of the cornerstones of traditional joinery.  Accuracy is very important, but when you achieve a perfect joint, it's hugely rewarding. Peter will show you how to mark out and cut mortise and tenons by hand. All materials supplied. Maximum of 6 students.

• Sharpening Carving Chisels with Robert Howard

Saturday 8th June, 9:30 – 3:30pm.
Cost: $180 including morning tea and lunch

Robert will take you through the process of sharpening and honing our carving chisels to keep them in peak condition. He will also touch on some carving techniques and exercises. All tools and materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own chisels. Maximum of 6 students.

• Two Day Parquetry Workshop with Peter Young

Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July, 9:30am - 4:00pm
Cost: $330 including morning tea and lunch.

In this two day workshop Peter will show you how to make a chessboard from veneer, glue it to a substrate and then apply a solid wood edge to complete the project. You will also have the opportunity to make Louis cubes, stars and other diamond patterns. The workshop covers selecting, cutting and trimming veneer, choice of substrates, glue-up techniques and making solid wood mitres. All materials and equipment supplied. Maximum of 6 students.

• Furniture Finishing with Carol Russell

Saturday 27th July, 9:30am - 3:30pm
Cost: $160 including morning tea and lunch.

A piece of furniture can be beautifully crafted, but it can be let down by poor finish preparation and application. In this course Carol will show you how to prepare surfaces and apply a range of finishes including shellac, buffing oils and wax. There is an emphasis on learning to make and use a traditional 'rubber' or 'mouse' to achieve a lustrous deep finish with shellac that will enhance your woodworking projects. All materials and equipment supplied. Maximum of 6 students.

• Two Day Abstract Sculpture Workshop with Gary Field

Saturday 3rd August and Sunday 4th August, 9:00am - 3:30pmpm
Cost: $330 including morning tea and lunch.

Through woodcarving, explore the art of sculpting abstract shapes inspired by objects from nature. Over the two days you will learn how to design a small sculpture, create a model and then carve it in wood using carving chisels and a Dremel power carver. You’ll be amazed at what you come up with. All materials and equipment are supplied for your very own sculpture. Maximum of 6 students.
