| The
Tormek System is a water-cooled, slow speed whetstone grinder that uses
a wide variety of jigs and attachments to assist sharpening items such as
scissors, chisels and moulder/planer blades. Jig angle set-ups are designed
so the user can find, repeat and maintain cutting edges. The grindstone
that comes standard with both the T7
and T3 is
SG-250/SG-200 aluminium oxide stone which can sharpen many different steels
including HSS. Another grindstone in the Tormek range is the SB-250
Blackstone grinding wheel. This wheel is suitable for sharpening edges
on harder steels and also maintaining and edge on tungsten carbide.
The SB-250 can be graded from 220g to 1000g with the SP-650
Stone Grader offering a fine or coarse cut. However, when maximum
material removal is required it is best to use the TT-50
truing tool to roughen the surface of the wheel to allow an increase
of material to be removed. The grains in the stone are smaller and harder
than the original SG-250 stone and wear back to the finer grit after a
few minutes of grinding. The SP-650 stone grader can be used later when
the wheel needs to be graded.
The Blackstone does a great job on items such as; plane blades, chisels,
knives and scissors. However the advantage of this wheel over the original
grindstone is the ability to sharpen planer and thicknesser blades that
are tipped with tungsten carbide. Router bits can also be touched up (freehand)
however a less than perfect result is achieved.
With the recent introduction of the DBS-22
Drill Bit sharpener, another item which can be sharpened with the
SB-250 is TCT twist drill bits. The DBS-22 is able to sharpen drill bits
from 3mm to 22mm and enables users to choose whether to maintain the current
angle or change it to suit drilling purposes.
The base mount of the jig fixes onto the support bar at the front of
the Tormek with the angle guide, and the drill clamp that rests on top.
When re-sharpening, the drill is held in place with the clamping device
and grinding depth regulated by a main setting screw. The setting screw
has another stop in place to set and cut the relief angle after the primary
edge is done. A four facet cutting edge leaves a point at the apex that
is an advantage over usual drill edges by not wandering around on the
workpieces when starting off.
With Tormek being a water cooled system, the risk of overheating bits
is nil. Initial set up can be time consuming, however after a couple of
practice runs it becomes more manageable and efficient. A manual is included
to assist in the set up, operation and troubleshooting. The DBS-22 may
seem a bit complicated at first, but Tormek provide plenty of support
material both in print form and on the web. Once mastered this jig gives
you complete control over the sharpening and angles of your drill bits.
