Basic Points on Planers & Thicknessers
The terms planer and thicknesser really refer to the same machine. This type of machine is used for dressing timber so that it is even and level.
The most basic thicknesser is a 12.5" benchtop machine; it is suitable for preparing smaller panels and timber lengths. Larger 15" and 20" thicknessers are more suitable for dressing large panels.
Another variation is our planer moulder. This allows you to use the same machine as a 13" thicknesser or as a small-profile moulding machine.
A new variation on the traditional design of the thicknesser is the helical cutter head that's now available with our spiral cutterhead models. The advantage of a spiral cutterhead is its shearing contact with the workpiece rather than the chopping effect produced by a traditional cutterhead. This translates into a much smoother cut with less chipping and tearout as well as significantly quieter operation. |
