Traditionally the #5-1/4W was referred to as a ’junior jack’. At 12" (300mm) in length, it fell between the #4 10"smoothing plane and the #5 14" jack plane. Veritas’ #5-1/4W varies from the traditional type in numerous ways, but the main difference is that this one has a 2" wide blade (rather than a 1-3/4") and the mouth is 4-1/2" behind the nose, rather than the orginal’s 3-1/2". This extra sole length in front of the blade makes it easier to cut accurately as it’s easier to keep the sole flush against the face of your workpiece when you start a cut. This combination (as well as a sensitive feed adjustment) allows this plane to serve as a jointing plane for most cabinet work. Weighs just under 2.3 kg. Patented.
