Wetterlings Axes

In Sweden 200 kilometres north of Stockholm lies the village of Storvik. People have worked with iron in this region since their Viking ancestors first fashioned their weapons from the local materials. Here in a small village workshop there are craftsmen toiling away at the forges of theWetterlings Axe Company much the same as there have been for nearly 130 years.

There is a lot of folklore attached to axes. They conjure images of early man carving out a place for himself in a hostile environment. No matter how sophisticated our tools become, we are drawn to their primitive simplicity and find they still have a place in our modern lives as useful tools.

TheWetterlings story began in 1882 when the engineer Otto Wetterling arrived in Storvik after several years in America. His brother Sven Avel Wetterling (the origin of the SAW stamped on the axes) had been producing axes at a forge on a small scale. Otto had studied the production of axes in America and brought home with him many innovative ideas, he combined these with the craftsmanship and experience of the old country to create the Wetterlings company that exists today. Since then the forge has been in uninterrupted use.

When you pick up aWetterlings axe, what you notice first is the weight and the hand-made look of it. Each axe has its own distinguishing mark - it’s not uniformly finished as mass-produced tools are.You can see where the steel has been hammered and shaped at the forge by the hands of a craftsman. It’s a beautiful thing and no two are exactly the same. The American Hickory handle fits the hand well and is designed to withstand high impact. It is secured to the head of the axe by the use of a wooden wedge and a steel locking ring. The user doesn’t need to use great force to cut effectively because the weight of the axe head is perfectly balanced to do the work with minimal effort. This is no ornament and it’s made to last a lifetime.

The high-grade Swedish steel contains alloys of silicon, manganese and vanadium that all contribute to superior tempering and the axe head is slowly hand-forged in a hammer forge press. The final product is completely dependent o the skill and patience of the blacksmith. Each axe head is protected by a leather sheath.

It’s a real treat for us to search the world and bring home unique tools to add to our range.Carba-Tec® is thrilled to be able to offer this beautiful range of axes to our customers. Whether your interest is in bush craft, camping or gardening, hunting, sculpting or even tool collecting, we believe Wetterlings axes will really add something special to your experience.
