Product Highlights February 2010

Product Highlights
by Tony Forbes

There are two new products we've got on offer that will be particularly interesting to those looking to enhance the productivity of their workshop - the Oneida Dust Deputy System and our KTE leads.

ONEIDA DUST DEPUTY SYSTEM

As a self-confessed killer of more than one vacuum cleaner over the years (refer to my earlier articles on dust extraction here and here), it is with a heavy heart that I need to announce to all brand name manufacturers of said machinery, my issues have been solved by the Oneida Dust Deputy.

My problem has been the poor design of standard vacuum systems and their reliance on a filter membrane to seaparate dust particles from their electronic componentry. It's great when you want to pick up ground-in dirt in your carpet, but not so good for large wood shavings and, most particularly, fine dust particles. Once the filter bag is full, it needs to be emptied (by someone...usually not me)! But how do you know when it's time, and how can you tell when the bag is so full that it's starving the motor or air and creating the perfect environment for a motor failure? Truth is, you don't know until it's too late.

In my previous articles, I have explained the advantages of dust extractors over vacuum cleaners. I also detailed the design principle behind cylconic dust extractors and discussed their advantages over conventional single stage dust extractors.

Like many other sawdust makers, I have a need for a shop vac style machine in my workshop. Many of my tools have a smaller connection and work much more efficiently with this low-volume, high-velocity connection. I am happy to say that I have found a solution to my problem.

The Oneida Dust Deputy is a simple yet effective way of separating the dust from the vacuum and allowing full peformance from the vacuum 100% of the time. Oneida have developed a portable cyclonic filter unitusing the same method of separating dust and air as the full-scale industrial units, but it is powered by your standard vacuum cleaner or shop vac. It improves the performance of the vacuum by reducing the amount of dust that enters the filter bag by around 98%. This means that the vacuum runs at close to 100% efficiency 100% of the time, instead of the reduction in performance as the fine dust starts filling the filter bag.

It collects the dust in a large 19 litre bucket (two are supplied with the kit), and the whole unit is connected inline between your hose and your vacuum, using the hose and fittings supplied. It is made in the USA and contains everything you need to 'round up that dust'.

Carba-Tec has been appointed to be the exclusive distributor of the special Australian Dust Deputy. Oneida hae helped develop this version so that it includes all the specific fittings required to make a connection to most vacuums and shop vac type machines sold here in Australia.

KTE POWER LEADS

While dust control in the workshop is always a primary concern, so is supply and distribution of power. This is particularly important when designing and re-organising the layout of a shed, however it's practically impossible to locate your machines and power tools exactly where you'd like to have them in relation to your power points. These need to be located in a safe and convenient location to avoid the web of tripping hazards caused by the good old extension cord. Another workshop nasty is the $5 four-way power board (which might even be plugged into a $10 six-way power board). Overloading and piggy-backing have long been outlawed in the workplace. Unless you have a purpose-built workshop, it is unlikely that you have more than one or two power points, and these are usually not located where you need them.

You'll find a solution to this problem with our new range of top-quality Australian-made KTE power products. Particularly notable is the Power Extender. This DIY power point extender provides infinitely more than your normal power lead - it's comprised of four sealed and switched pre-mounted 10A power points that can easily be fixed to a wall or workbench. the power points are spaced three metres apart to give you ample coverage in most workshops. The Power Extender also has a built-in RCD (Residual Current Device), overload protection and illuminated switches.

Another new extension is the KTE 1.8 metre long 10 amp RCD and purpose-built 15 amp armour-plated machinery power lead, built specificially to run larger machines and to take a beating in the workshop.
