Colen Clenton Tools

There is a poise and simplicity about the tools that Colen Clenton produces. They are very well engineered and are highly functional. It’s a fact with good design that if an object fulfils its brief properly, then being aesthetically pleasing is almost a by-product.

Colen has an extensive range of tools available, but the core products are his recalibratable squares, marking and cutting gauges and dovetail markers. The unique design of Colen’s squares and dovetail markers mean that if the are knocked out of square, they can be re calibrated back to an accurate setting by adjusting the brass screws at the end. The cutaway picture details the engineering involved in creating this feature.

The dovetail markers come in a range of angles including the traditional 1:6 for softer timber and 1:8 for harder timbers. As a rule, softer timbers have a steeper angle to avoid the joint fatiguing and the dovetails sliding out of the sockets. Also the thinner the timber the less obvious the angle of the joint. In small box work, a 1:6 angle dovetail would look more effective. Colen also makes 1:7 dovetail markers after many requests from customers all over the world.

Colen’s marking gauges sit beautifully in the hand, making them easy to manoeuvre and adjust. The single pin marking gauge is well suited to marking out with the grain or marking a single point. The superb cutting gauge is perfect for marking parallel lines and leaving a crisp cut to use as a reference for your chisel to create accurate joinery. The HSS cutter is specially designed so as you mark out, the gauge is pulled towards the face of the timber, preventing it from being diverted off track by the grain.

Accurate marking and measuring is fundamental to how much enjoyment you get from your craft and the successful outcome of your projects. Woodworking is full of challenges at the best of times, so having high quality reliable tools to help you along the way can give much needed support.
