As a rule, softer timbers have a steeper angle to avoid the joint fatiguing and the dovetails sliding out of the sockets. Also the thinner the timber the less obvious the angle of the joint. In small box work, a 1:6 angle dovetail would look more effective. Colen also makes 1:7 dovetail markers after many requests from customers all over the world.Colen’s marking gauges sit beautifully in the hand, making them easy to manoeuvre and adjust. The single pin marking gauge is well suited to marking out with the grain or marking a single point. The superb cutting gauge is perfect for marking parallel lines and leaving a crisp cut to use as a reference for your chisel to create accurate joinery.
