A quick tip: rest the handle in your palm and use the thumb of your other hand to steady and guide the blade. Keep both top corners of the V above the surface as you cut. If a corner dips below the surface, it tears the fibres instead of slicing them. On curves, one wall of the V often cuts against the grain. If you see tearing on one side, reverse your cutting direction for that section. Palm tools are pushed by hand, so don't strike them with a mallet. To keep the edge keen, strop the outside bevels on a leather strop and use a folded or shaped strop for the inside of the V.
