A quick tip: outline your design first with a V-tool or by setting in the walls, so the waste has somewhere to break away cleanly. Then rest the chisel handle in your palm and use the thumb of your other hand to steady and guide the blade. Clear the background in light, overlapping passes, working from the outline outwards and keeping the bevel low.
