Shape Versatile Curves with a Swiss-Made D Series Medium Gouge
When a full-size carving tool feels too long or bulky in the hand, the Pfeil D Series Medium Gouge gives you the same quality in a more manageable size. Each blade is forged from the same Chrome Vanadium steel as Pfeil's standard tools, but with a shorter 85mm blade and a smaller handle, bringing the overall length to 200mm.
The medium sweep sits between a shallow and a deep gouge, so it handles a broad spread of work, from roughing out shapes to refining gentle curves with control. That medium sizing makes the D Series a sensible choice for younger carvers, or anyone working with smaller hands who wants closer command of the cut. The handle carries flat edges, so the gouge stays put on the bench instead of rolling away while you work. It arrives sharpened and ready for use, so you can head straight to the bench.
Key Features
- Chrome Vanadium Steel Blade: The same quality steel as Pfeil's standard tools, ground for a keen edge that holds up to regular carving.
- Medium Gouge Profile: A mid-range sweep that falls between shallow and deep, giving you one versatile tool for roughing, shaping, and refining.
- Shorter 85mm Blade: A compact blade with a 200mm overall length, giving you closer, more controlled handling.
- Smaller Handle: Sized for younger carvers and those with smaller hands, so the tool sits comfortably and works with ease.
- Flat-Edged Handle: Keeps the gouge from rolling off the bench, ready when you reach for it.
- Sharpened and Ready to Use: Arrives honed straight from the factory, so you can head to the bench and start carving straight away.
Understanding the Pfeil Codes
Pfeil's numbering system tells you exactly what each chisel does, once you know how to read it:
- D: Marks a smaller series tool, such as D8.
- S: Indicates a skew chisel, such as 1S.
- A: Placed after the first number, this shows a bent blade, such as 8A.
- First number: The depth of the gouge, running from 1 (flat) through to 15 (quite deep).
- Last number: The width of the chisel in millimetres.
