Veritas Low-Angle Jack Plane: Crisp Mitres, Clean End Grain and True Edges From One Plane

End grain that tears instead of slicing, or a mitre that drifts a hair off square, can undo hours of careful work. A plane that chatters or won't hold its setting only makes it harder. The Veritas Low-Angle Jack Plane gives you the weight, stability and fine control to slice cleanly across end grain, shoot accurate mitres and true up edges with confidence.

Its generous size, low centre of gravity and radically set-back mouth keep the plane planted and steady, stroke after stroke.

Key Features

  • 12° bevel-up bed: Paired with the standard 25° blade, it gives a 37° effective cutting angle that slices end grain and mitres cleanly. Add the optional lapped 38° or 50° blades to change the cutting angle with a simple blade swap, which is handy for tricky or figured timber.
  • Adjustable mouth: Close it to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimal tear-out, or open it for heavier stock removal. The front locking knob and unique mouth adjustment screw let you set it quickly and accurately.
  • Norris-style adjuster: Combined feed and lateral adjustment in one control makes blade setting easy and precise. Set screws on either side of the blade stop it shifting in use, without limiting lateral positioning.
  • Built for shooting: Machined thumb recesses on both sides and a specially shaped lever cap give you a comfortable, secure grip on the shooting board.
  • Ductile cast-iron body: Fully stress-relieved so it stays flat and true over time, with sides machined square to the sole for accurate shooting and edge work.
  • Solid registration: An enclosed toe, one third the length of the sole, helps the plane register firmly on your workpiece from the very start of the cut.
  • Comfortable hardwood furniture: The large front knob and rear handle give you a confident grip through long planing sessions.
  • Expandable with accessories: Threaded holes on the sides accept the Veritas Technical Fence, Variable-Angle Fence or Shooting Grip (all sold separately).
  • PM-V11 tool steel blade: The included lapped 25° blade holds a keen edge for longer and sharpens with ease.

Ideal For

  • Furniture makers and cabinetmakers shooting accurate mitres and square ends.
  • Woodworkers who need clean, tear-free cuts on end grain.
  • Jointing edges for glue-ups and panel work.
  • Initial smoothing before final finishing.
  • Anyone building a versatile hand plane kit around one dependable workhorse.

A quick tip: for end grain and shooting, close the mouth right down and set a light cut with the Norris-style adjuster. Thin, even shavings give you the cleanest surface. When you move on to jointing or initial smoothing, open the mouth to take heavier cuts. If you're working with interlocked or figured timber that tends to tear, try the optional 50° blade for a steeper cutting angle and a smoother finish.
