Firmer chisels have a blade with a rectangular cross-section. This means that they are stronger and can be used for tougher or heavier work. Generally these chisels are used in Òchop and leverÓ actions, where the chisel is hit with a mallet into the timber, and the timber is then levered out, the extra thick blade makes this possible. They are tapered along the length of the blade giving additional strength.
